Online poker hand ranks rules – An overview

Online poker games have several hand rules for players to follow if you want to win and make money from poker games. There are several hand ranking rules of online poker which are used separately in separate games. The most popular ones are Badugi hand rules, traditional hand rules, ace to five lowball hand ranks, and lowball hand ranks. Here we describe the lowball hand ranks and ace to five lowball hand ranks.

Ace to five lowball hand ranks –

This hand ranking rule is used for low a hand which means hands where the lower value card determines the winner. The traditional games such as Hi/Lo, Omaha hi/lo, stud hi/lo and Razz are the low only stud games which use this type of hand rankings. Here the suits are not taken into consideration and nor the flush or straight takes place. In this hand rank, the aces are always considered as a low card if you are playing a low hand.

The calculation of the value of five cards low hand, in this case, starts with the card on top and then to decide the winner it moves down. The hands in this rules of online poker is as follows –

Wheel or five low –

If a player has the card of value 4, 5, 3, deuce and ace then it is called a wheel. If there is a tie then the pot is split among all the five high hands.

Six low –

If there are five unpaired cards and one of the card with the highest value is a six then it is known as six low. In case of a tie in this scenario then the lower second highest ranking card is the winner of the pot. The highest value card is 6 so that is not taken into consideration. If the second card is also same then further cards are taken into consideration to decide the winner.

Seven low and eight low – this is similar to the six low hand but here the difference is that one of the cards with the highest value should be either seven or eight. The rules to break tie are also same as six low. In some games, even nine low, queen low exists.

2-7 Lowball Hand Ranks –

These rankings are completely opposite to the traditional high hand rankings rules. If you are getting the worst hand in the traditional ranking of poker so here you will get the best hand in case of 2-7 lowball hand ranks. Here in this rankings, the ace plays a high card so straights and flushes are not good for players in this rules.

Seven low –

If there are five unconnected and unpaired cards that belong to different suits and the highest value card is a seven then the term is seven low. It is also known as number one or wheel and the best possible hand, in this case, is if a player has cards 7,5,4,3 and 2. Similarly, there can be eight low, nine low and ten low scenarios.

If there is no qualifier in these games for a low then the lowest hand will win the pot even if it's worse or a pair.
